Become Versed in Craps – Tips and Tactics: The Background of Craps

Be brilliant, play smart, and pickup craps the ideal way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s horsemen wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
