Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard during a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
