Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the beginnings of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s knights bet on Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
