Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about one hundred years old. Current craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the British, the French moved south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Later, he designed the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
