Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He created the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
