Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps formed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French headed down south and discovered refuge in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and all over the country. Most think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
