Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for certain the origin of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when expelled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi riverboats and across the country. A good many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
