Pickup Craps – Pointers and Tactics: The History of Craps

Be cunning, play clever, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps come about from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the losing throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A great many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He appended the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he invented the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
