Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when driven away by the British, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
