Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard amid a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the British, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was gotten from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps.
