Be smart, play smart, and become versed in craps the ideal way!

Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Modern craps formed from the old English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been created by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is believed that Sir William’s horsemen enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.

Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when expelled by the British, the French relocated south and located sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
