Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s supposed that Sir William’s horsemen gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when exiled by the British, the French moved down south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi barges and throughout the country. Many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
