Be cunning, play smart, and master craps the right way!
Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s presumed that Sir William’s soldiers bet on Hazard through a blockade on the fortress Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the English, the French headed south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the country. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
