Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Current craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was derived from the term for the losing toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A good many consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
