Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was derived from the castle’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when banished by the British, the French relocated south and discovered sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was gotten from the name of the bad luck toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and throughout the nation. Many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In the early 1900s, Winn built the modern craps layout. He added the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the boxes for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
