Dice and dice games goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately a century old. Current craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard during a siege on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which was acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. A good many think the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn created the modern craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to not win. At another time, he designed the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
