Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about one hundred years old. Current craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the ancestry of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen bet on Hazard during a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed south and found sanctuary in southern Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the father of modern craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps layout. He added the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
