Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Current craps formed from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, although Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers gambled on Hazard amid a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the castle’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French moved down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they after a while became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favored game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the term for the losing toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the country. A few consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he established the boxes for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
