Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is supposed that Sir William’s soldiers enjoyed Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s believed that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the bad luck toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. Most consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps setup. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to not win. Later, he invented the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
