Games that use dice and the dice themselves goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one knows for sure the origin of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It’s believed that Sir William’s knights wagered on Hazard through a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French headed down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns simplified the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi scows and throughout the country. A few consider the dice maker John H. Winn as the father of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the current craps setup. He created the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
