Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the origin of the game, however Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, around the twelfth century. It is theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was derived from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when banished by the English, the French moved south and discovered safety in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning toss of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and all over the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In 1907, Winn created the current craps layout. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to lose. At another time, he created the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
