Dice and dice games date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately 100 years old. Modern craps formed from the ancient English game called Hazard. No one absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins gambled on Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when driven away by the English, the French moved south and settled in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which is gotten from the term for the non-winning toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi river boats and across the country. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn created the modern craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players can bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he invented the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
