Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is only about a century old. Current craps come about from the ancient English game referred to as Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the beginnings of the game, but Hazard is said to have been created by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It is theorized that Sir William’s horsemen played Hazard amid a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 1700s, when displaced by the British, the French relocated down south and found sanctuary in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns changed the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the losing throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and across the nation. A few acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn assembled the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. At another time, he developed the spots for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
