Dice and dice games goes all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is only about 100 years old. Current craps evolved from the 12th Century Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s knights gambled on Hazard through a siege on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when expelled by the English, the French moved down south and discovered safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they fled Acadia, they took their best-loved game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the title to craps, which is acquired from the term for the bad luck toss of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi scows and all over the nation. A great many consider the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he created the spots for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
