Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but modern craps is approximately one hundred years old. Modern craps developed from the old Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, although Hazard is said to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights played Hazard during a blockade on the fortification Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonizers imported the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French headed down south and found safety in southern Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of two in the game of Hazard, referred to as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game migrated to the Mississippi river boats and all over the nation. Most think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so players could bet on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he established the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
