Dice and dice games goes back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the ancient Anglo game referred to as Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the birth of the game, but Hazard is said to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is supposed that Sir William’s paladins enjoyed Hazard through a siege on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonists brought the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when expelled by the English, the French headed south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they eventually became Cajuns. When they were driven out of Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it more mathematically fair. It’s said that the Cajuns altered the title to craps, which was gotten from the term for the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and throughout the nation. Most acknowledge the dice maker John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps setup. He appended the Don’t Pass line so gamblers can bet on the dice to lose. Later, he invented the spaces for Place wagers and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
