Be brilliant, play smart, and become versed in craps the proper way!
Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Crusades, but modern craps is just about a century old. Modern craps come about from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one knows for sure the birth of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Englishman, Sir William of Tyre, in the 12th century. It’s theorized that Sir William’s knights enjoyed Hazard amid a blockade on the castle Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French colonizers brought the game Hazard to Canada. In the 18th century, when displaced by the English, the French relocated south and found safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they took their favorite game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns adjusted the name to craps, which was acquired from the name of the bad luck throw of two in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi scows and across the nation. A few think the dice maker John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn designed the modern craps layout. He created the Don’t Pass line so players can wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he created the spaces for Place bets and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
