Games that use dice and the dice themselves date all the way back to the Crusades, but current craps is just about a century old. Modern craps developed from the ancient Anglo game called Hazard. Nobody absolutely knows the birth of the game, but Hazard is believed to have been discovered by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was gotten from the citadel’s name.
Early French settlers brought the game Hazard to Acadia. In the 1700s, when driven away by the English, the French headed down south and located safety in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their favored game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns modernized the game and made it mathematically fair. It is said that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is acquired from the name of the non-winning throw of 2 in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game moved to the Mississippi riverboats and throughout the nation. A good many think the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of current craps. In the early 1900s, Winn developed the current craps layout. He put in place the Don’t Pass line so players can bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he developed the boxes for Place bets and put in place the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
