Become Versed in Craps – Hints and Tactics: The Past of Craps

Be clever, play brilliant, and discover how to play craps the correct way!

Dice and dice games date all the way back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is only about a century old. Modern craps evolved from the old Anglo game referred to as Hazard. No one absolutely knows the ancestry of the game, however Hazard is said to have been made up by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, around the 12th century. It is presumed that Sir William’s soldiers played Hazard through a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The name Hazard was acquired from the fortress’s name.

Early French settlers imported the game Hazard to Nova Scotia. In the 18th century, when exiled by the British, the French relocated south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they at a later time became known as Cajuns. When they left Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, with them. The Cajuns broke down the game and made it fair mathematically. It’s believed that the Cajuns changed the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the losing toss of two in the game of Hazard, recognized as "crabs."

From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi riverboats and across the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the creator of modern craps. In 1907, Winn built the current craps layout. He put in place the Do not Pass line so gamblers could bet on the dice to not win. Afterwords, he designed the spaces for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
