Games that use dice and the dice themselves date back to the Middle Eastern Crusades, but current craps is approximately 100 years old. Current craps developed from the 12th Century English game called Hazard. Nobody knows for certain the beginnings of the game, although Hazard is believed to have been invented by the Anglo, Sir William of Tyre, sometime in the twelfth century. It is believed that Sir William’s paladins wagered on Hazard during a blockade on the citadel Hazarth in 1125 AD. The title Hazard was acquired from the fortification’s name.
Early French colonists imported the game Hazard to Canada. In the 1700s, when displaced by the English, the French moved south and settled in the south of Louisiana where they a while later became known as Cajuns. When they departed Acadia, they brought their preferred game, Hazard, along. The Cajuns streamlined the game and made it more mathematically fair. It is believed that the Cajuns altered the name to craps, which is derived from the name of the non-winning throw of snake-eyes in the game of Hazard, known as "crabs."
From Louisiana, the game extended to the Mississippi barges and throughout the nation. A good many acknowledge the dice builder John H. Winn as the founder of current craps. In 1907, Winn developed the modern craps setup. He added the Do not Pass line so players could wager on the dice to lose. Afterwords, he developed the spots for Place wagers and added the Big 6, Big 8, and Hardways.
